Our History

The origins of the Macedonian Orthodox community in Central Ohio can be traced back to 1965 when the original church, St. Mary’s, was founded on the east side of Columbus. This was a time when Macedonian immigrants were settling in the area, seeking new opportunities and a better life for their families. St. Mary’s Macedonian Orthodox Church quickly became a focal point for the growing Macedonian community, providing them with spiritual solace and a sense of unity far away from their homeland.

Over the years, the Macedonian Orthodox community in Columbus grew significantly, necessitating the establishment of a larger and more accommodating church. In 2006, the community realized their vision with the establishment of The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The location was carefully chosen to provide easy access for not only residents of Columbus but also those from surrounding areas.

The new cathedral exemplifies the architectural beauty prevalent in Macedonian church design. It showcases intricate Byzantine-style domes and stunning iconography that tell the stories of the Orthodox faith. The cathedral's interior features meticulously crafted wooden iconostasis, adorned with icons depicting saints and biblical scenes. Its serene atmosphere invites parishioners to find solace in their spiritual journey and connect with their Macedonian roots.

Aside from serving as a religious sanctuary, The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral plays a vital role in preserving and promoting Macedonian culture within the community. The church organizes
cultural events, festivals, and educational programs, providing opportunities for Macedonian Americans to celebrate their heritage and strengthen their ties to their Macedonian identity.

Throughout its history, The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral has been a pillar of strength and connection for the Macedonian Orthodox community in Central Ohio. Its founding in 2006 marked an important milestone in the growth and development of the Macedonian Orthodox faith in the region. Today, the cathedral stands proudly as a beacon of faith, culture, and community, upholding the traditions and values of the Macedonian people.
